Artist, Cartoonist, Poet, Playwright and Lyricist, Michael is the originator of “Symphonic Space”, a universal visual language innovation. This concept is seen as the graphic action of creative imagination, which allows for the freedom of objective association. It represents pure perception harmonised with technical thinking within the picture plane, free from external control by the viewer.
His visual inquiry is sculptural at its core, exploring many different mediums. Michael plays with pure sculptural form, focusing on graphic eye-lines and mass, ranging from realism to pure abstraction. His work is realised in complex drawings, paintings (using both tonal and dissonant colours), collage, assemblage, and other innovative actions. These methods open up the visual inquiry into decoding psychological images, distinct from the need to understand the movement of technical image thinking.
Michael’s first solo sculpture exhibition opened at the Horsham Regional Gallery in 1982. He subsequently held solo shows at Irving Sculpture Gallery (Glebe), Hamilton Regional Gallery, and the Frankston Art Centre. He was also selected for group exhibitions, including the Ninth Mildura Sculpture Triennial, the Third Australian Sculpture Triennial at the NGV, and the John Olsen Drawing Prize.
His work is featured in private, national, and international collections, including the Hamilton Regional Gallery, ONE15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore, and Collezione Internazionale, Artist del San Michele, Italy. In 2003, he was commissioned to write ‘Selected Contemporary Artists of Australia’ and has since published four books. In 2005, he served as the chief judge of the Camberwell Rotary Art Show. From 2020 to 2021, he exhibited “Drawing the Line” at the Illume International Art Gallery, which is currently available online at Illume International Art Gallery.
Michael has three major collaborations with ceramist Gary Keen, composer Stan Day, and his artist/classical musician wife Anne-Patricia Hemingway. He was featured in “ARTWISE” – Visual Arts 7-10 for the Australian Curriculum, and his recent poems and paintings currently appear in “Oxygen 6, 7, 8 & 9,” a contemporary poetry and art magazine.
